Three reasons to get pet insurance for Huskies
Huskies are increasingly popular. They’re beautiful, affectionate and chatty dogs (and Game of Thrones probably had something to do with it). But like all dog breeds, they come with certain specific health risks that can be expensive to diagnose and treat – which is why it’s a good idea to get pet insurance for Huskies.
Here are some health issues that commonly affect Huskies.
Hypothyroidism
Covered by insurance!
This hormonal condition is pretty common among Huskies. It reduces levels of the metabolism-controlling hormone thyroxine by attacking the thyroid gland. Potential symptoms include lethargy, hair loss, changes in skin colour, and weight gain – all of which can make life horrible for your Husky. Thankfully, it’s treatable – about $50-$150 for tests and $20-$50 per month for long term medication – and this could be covered by pet insurance.
Eye issues
Covered by insurance!
Some of the hardest health issues for pet parents to spot in dogs are those affecting their eyes – and Huskies are particularly vulnerable. They can be affected by cataracts – which cost around $1,500 to $5,000 per eye – to treat, but also glaucoma. This usually requires one of three kinds of surgery, costing from $500 to £3,000, with up to $100 a month on long term aftercafre.
Hip Dysplasia
Covered by insurance!
When we think of Huskies, we think of these noble hounds pulling people in big coats through the snow of Alaska and Canada. So, nobody wants to see one these energetic, powerful dogs unable to run or even walk properly. Unfortunately, they’re prone to hip dysplasia, where the joint and bone don’t line up properly, which can lead to arthritis – a crippling and painful condition that could set you back up to $1,000 for x-rays and then, if this shows arthritis, $2,000 per year for meds or $7,500 per joint for surgery.
