Four very good reasons to get pet insurance for French Bulldogs
Who doesn’t love a French Bulldog? Hugely popular in California, these playful little scamps have big personalities and big hearts, making them perfect companions for any household, especially one with kids.
They absolutely love human company and require relatively little in the way of grooming. But like all dog breeds, they come with their own specific – and potentially expensive – health issues, with respiratory and dental issues common. The good news is, pet insurance for French Bulldogs can cover treatment for all of them.
Here are four medical problems French Bulldogs often face.
Respiratory issues
Covered by insurance!
Anyone who knows dogs knows that flat-faced (brachycephalic if we’re going to get technical) breeds are more likely to develop breathing problems. These can include conditions like brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) or tracheal collapse, which can lead to a painful cough only treatable with surgery that costs up to $6,500. There’s not much you can do to prevent it but keeping your dog fit will help. Frenches don’t have the greatest exercise tolerance due to those noses, and they also overheat easily. So while they do need exercise, keeping their diet in check is vital in stopping your bulldog becoming an overly full dog.
Obesity

See above. These pups can’t do much exercise but can put away their food—especially if you’re feeding them unhealthy treats and leftovers. This can lead to all kinds of problems, not least diabetes which costs up to cost $2,000 per year to treat. Keep your French hench.

Dislocating Kneecap

A ‘luxating patella’ is a common condition in smaller breeds and can lead to arthritis. It’s best to catch it early, so keep a careful eye on your pup and make sure you give them age-appropriate exercise. Otherwise you could end up with a surgery bill of up to $5,000 or arthritis treatment costing $2,000 per year.
Dental Issues
Covered by insurance!
You can’t help loving a French Bulldog’s cute grin, but they can cause complications. The lack of space in their mouths often leads to a build-up of tartar, increasing the risk of gum disease and dental decay—the damage from which can cost thousands of dollars. It can also cause infections, the bacteria from causes major problems in the liver and kidneys. You should clean and check your dog’s teeth, but also get them regular dental checks through a wellness plan (from just $30 a month).
