Pet insurance in Alabama

Pets have a great life in the Yellowhammer State but there are many reasons why you should get pet insurance in Alabama.

Looking for pet insurance in The Heart of Dixie? With a lower cost of living and no state limit on how many pets you can have at home, that’s a good move. Over half of the households in Alabama have pets and housing costs are also some of the lowest in the country. Combine that with acres of land to explore and you’ve got yourself the perfect state for pet parents.

Going nuts for walks

Alabama is known for its American Civil Rights Movement history and being one of the biggest cotton and peanut producers in the US. That means there are plenty of open plains and agricultural areas, and also mountain ridges, lakes, swamps, and valleys. Little River Canyon National Preserve, Oak Mountain State Park, and Talladega National Forest are just some of the stunning places you can take your furry friend. The Gulf and Bay coastlines are also well known to have a range of dog beaches. Try the nearby Dauphin Island Beach, which welcomes pooches all year.

The Cotton State isn’t just known for its varied landscape. There’s a choice of over 400 cities to visit, with Montgomery being the state capital. But Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile have some of the highest population levels. That means more traffic, pollution, and higher pet insurance costs than rural areas due to the higher risk of accidents with motor vehicles. Pet insurance in these emergency situations could save you up to $3,000 if your feline friend or pup suffers a broken leg or head trauma. It’s worth the investment.

A little luxury

The plus-side of city living is that there’s a huge choice of pet-friendly restaurants, hotels, and activities to enjoy. The Battle House Renaissance Hotel and Spa welcomes both cats and dogs and allows crated pets to be left unattended in the room while you enjoy a massage in their spa. You’ll also find dedicated parks for your pets to let off some steam. Try Daphne Dog Park, and a cat café called Gatos and Beans in Birmingham.

Something to consider about being a pet parent in Alabama is the very hot summer months. These can be a risk to pets left outside and can even affect pets during short walks. Paws might sustain heat injuries or burns if the sidewalks become too hot, which could cost up to $1,500 to treat. Dehydration and heatstroke are also common health issues in hot climates, with treatment ranging from $1,000 to $6,000. Even if your Cockapoo or French Bulldog is begging to go out in those conditions, it's always best to wait until it gets cooler. It’s therefore against state law to tether animals outside for over eight hours.

Why get pet insurance at all?

At Petted, we sincerely believe that pet insurance is a must for all pet parents, whether you live in New York, North Carolina or Nebraska. It doesn’t matter if you’re a city- or country-dweller, if you have a Bull Mastiff or a Burmese, your beloved pet is at risk from injury, illness and inherited conditions – and these things can cost a lot of money to fix.

If you don’t have a very large savings account then you run the risk of either getting into a ton of debt (we’re talking tens of thousands of dollars in some cases) or – and we hate to think about this – not being able to pay for your pet’s treatment and having to either give them up or, tragically, have them euthanized.

So, for the sake of a few dollars a month, please buy yourself some peace of mind and your pet a healthier, more secure future. To find the best pet insurance policy for where you live, click here. We'll fetch you the perfect quotes in less than a minute.

Our Boston Terrier, Maya, gave us such a fright when she suffered a heart attack last year. The emergency treatment alone cost us around $3,000 but we’re well aware that the overall cost could add up to $8,000 easily once we look at supportive care with ongoing medication. It’s unclear whether she’ll need a pacemaker so we’re relying on our pet insurance to back us up in that instance.

My darling Otis wasn’t being herself and I noticed she had a swollen abdomen. After taking her to the vet, she was diagnosed with an enlarged liver. Our pet insurance covered the $2,200 vet bill for initial rehydration therapy, multivitamins, and antibiotics. She might need surgery though depending on her results which will incur further costs. As a single mum I wouldn’t have been able to help her without the financial help.
