Pet insurance in Iowa

Pets have a great life in the Hawkeye State but there are many reasons why you should get pet insurance in Iowa.

With more than 80 state parks, Iowa is a beautiful place for your furry friend to stretch their legs, either on their leash or off it. Its insurance rates are relatively consistent as well, with prices in Des Moines not much different to prices in Davenport.

As a pet parent, you can feel comfortable letting your Labrador run off the leash in places like Ames Dog Park, just behind the city’s animal shelter, or the 12-acre Raccoon River Dog Park, which even goes to the effort of keeping large and small dogs separate. But if, for whatever reason, your dog gets into a fight with another, even if it’s of the same size, remember how valuable insurance will be: a cut paw could cost you $1,500 if you didn’t have the paperwork, and a blood clot could cost $1,800. Emergency surgery could even set you back $5,000.

Positioned in the middle of the US, Iowa has no beaches for your pet to explore, but it more than makes up for this by boasting some of the country’s finest, greenest landscapes. With more than 43,000 acres of forest, your dog can chase squirrels to its heart’s content. Stephens State Forest is larger than any other in the US and home to plenty of animals that might cause your pet’s ears to prick up: cottontail rabbits, opossums, and skunks, for example. But bear in mind that some animals may feel threatened, and if your dog is attacked by a coyote you could be looking at a bill of $4,500. It is absolutely essential to vaccinate your dog against rabies, as Iowa animals like bats and skunks can carry the disease and pass it on to dogs who are not vaccinated. If such a bite has occurred, your dog will need to see a vet immediately. Even if it does not have rabies, the visit would set you back $400. This is a scary experience that insurance makes less stressful.

“Insurance often covers vital vaccinations, such as rabies, which is so beneficial when travelling around Iowa”

Just as Iowa has an abundance of forest, it also has a wide range of streams for your dog to splash in. Just be careful of what might lie beneath the water: if your dog gets a stone lodged in their paw, or stumbles and breaks a bone, you could be looking at an operation in the region of $2,000.

And, when you need somewhere to go after you’ve exhausted yourself and your canine friend, Noodles and Company (Iowa City), Big Dave and Holly’s (Le Claire), and Casa Azul (Coralville) are just three of the many restaurants that welcome dogs inside. Be careful they don’t eat anything too spicy, though, as even something as mundane as diarrhoea could set you back a few hundred dollars.

If you lose your pet in Iowa, you’ll be well looked after. The Pet Project Midwest operates the Iowa Pet Project, an initiative that brings together volunteers and animal organisations to help bring pets back to their parents.

Why get pet insurance at all?

At Petted, we sincerely believe that pet insurance is a must for all pet parents, whether you live in New York, North Carolina or Nebraska. It doesn’t matter if you’re a city- or country-dweller, if you have a Bull Mastiff or a Burmese, your beloved pet is at risk from injury, illness and inherited conditions – and these things can cost a lot of money to fix.

If you don’t have a very large savings account then you run the risk of either getting into a ton of debt (we’re talking tens of thousands of dollars in some cases) or – and we hate to think about this – not being able to pay for your pet’s treatment and having to either give them up or, tragically, have them euthanized.

So, for the sake of a few dollars a month, please buy yourself some peace of mind and your pet a healthier, more secure future. To find the best pet insurance policy for where you live, click here. We'll fetch you the perfect quotes in less than a minute.

During a regular exam, our vet found a tumor in our dog Ursula’s thymus. She’s a Labrador, so apparently this wasn’t entirely unexpected, but it was still a shock to us. The vet needed to carry out open surgery to get at the tumor. Luckily, our Ursula made a full recovery. Our insurance plan meant not only that we only ended up paying $300 but also that we got to spend a few more years with her.

Chad, our three-year-old Main Coon, contracted a horrible condition called tick paralysis. This is exactly the kind of thing that would have been expensive to treat – in the region of $2,000 – but thanks to our accident-and-illness insurance plan, we didn’t end up paying a dollar.

Fortunately, our insurance plan covers dental issues – when our huge Leonberger Grunge had inflamed gums we needed to have him sedated so that the vet could investigate. It was $300 we didn’t have, so we were very grateful we were covered – and so was Grunge.
