Pet insurance in Idaho

Pets have a great life in the Gem State but there are many reasons why you should get pet insurance in Idaho

Idaho is nicknamed the Gem state because of its abundance of gemstones, and it’s certainly a gem state for pet parents. The cost of living here is lower than average which means it’s more affordable to have a pet. The Idaho Humane Society is on hand to help though, for those in financial difficulty or pet parents who are limited to the house and unable to buy pet supplies.

Walk the walk

The landscape in Idaho is varied, with beautiful mountains providing a backdrop to glistening rivers and sweeping fields. It’s no surprise then that there is an endless choice of scenic walking trails to discover with your furry companion, many of which feature lakes and waterfalls. A few dog-friendly routes include Shoshone Falls Park, Tubbs Hill, and Moose Lake and Mountain Trail.

“Medication for blue-green algae poisoning could cost anything from $300 to $3,000.”

During the warm summer months, algae blooms may appear in waterways which are toxic to fish and dogs alike. If the water appears to be blue/green, keep your dog away at all costs. Algae blooms toxicity symptoms vary from vomiting and rashes to seizures and liver damage. Your dog may need 24/7 care or medication which could cost anything from $300 to $3,000. Pet insurance could cover this cost and ensure emergency treatment is available.

Another thing to consider is the local wildlife. The Idaho Panhandle National Forests consist of three forests in North Idaho. Their vast woodland is home to over 300 wildlife species which includes grey wolves, brown bears, and bighorn sheep. If you plan on venturing into the forest, you might encounter these dangerous animals, but rattlesnakes or coyotes are more common. Domestic pets are allowed in these areas but are your responsibility, so it’s best to have pet insurance just in case things get hairy.

Pets in the city

If nature sounds a bit too risky for your liking, Idaho has several large cities too. Indianapolis, the state capital and largest city, has a population of almost 900,000, while Boise has plenty of restaurants that welcome pups to dinner. Trolley House, Fork, and Cloud 9 Brewery are a good place to start. There are also many hotels in Idaho Falls which are perfect for a pet sleepover like the Residence Inn by Marriott, Best Western Plus Driftwood Inn, and Candlewood Suites.

Idaho has an average snowfall of 38 inches per year, which is above the US average of 28 inches. Pets which may live outside during the warmer months should be brought inside for Winter to avoid hypothermia. If you think your Golden Retriever might be at risk of hypothermia, pet insurance could cover the average $2,500 cost of treatment.

As with most states, your pet must be vaccinated against rabies and licensed to show whether they have been spayed or neutered. Idaho pet laws also give vets the right to give your pet to a pound if you don’t collect them within 10 days of treatment. A horror that isn’t worth thinking about but important to know!

Why get pet insurance at all?

At Petted, we sincerely believe that pet insurance is a must for all pet parents, whether you live in New York, North Carolina or Nebraska. It doesn’t matter if you’re a city- or country-dweller, if you have a Bull Mastiff or a Burmese, your beloved pet is at risk from injury, illness and inherited conditions – and these things can cost a lot of money to fix.

If you don’t have a very large savings account then you run the risk of either getting into a ton of debt (we’re talking tens of thousands of dollars in some cases) or – and we hate to think about this – not being able to pay for your pet’s treatment and having to either give them up or, tragically, have them euthanized.

So, for the sake of a few dollars a month, please buy yourself some peace of mind and your pet a healthier, more secure future. To find the best pet insurance policy for where you live, click here. We'll fetch you the perfect quotes in less than a minute.

What do Idaho residents think about pet insurance?

My girlfriend’s Chihuahua is called Titan because he has typical little dog syndrome. He’s always biting off more than he can chew which led to him chomping into a giant dog bone at the pet store and displacing his tooth. The vet bill came to $840.29 to be exact but it was covered by the pet insurance. You wouldn’t think a tiny dog could cost so much money.

We caught our Rottweiler, Gizmo, eating from the bin – no idea what he managed to get into, but he was scooting around the garden on his butt all day with diarrhea. It served him right, but we took him to the vets to be safe. The vet said he had mycotoxin poisoning and prescribed him with some meds. It all cost us about $1,000 which the insurance covered, but we think Gizmo has learnt his lesson.
